Know the Rules Before You Break Them
A conversation with Clint Houck on how to build something new inside an industry designed to resist it.
Welcome back to The Pour, the show where we sit down with the founders, operators, and innovators we work with, ask one big question, and answer it before the coffee runs out.
In this episode, Moxie Labs co-founder James Koran is joined by Clint Houck, VP of Partnerships at Fair. Clint has spent 16 years working at the intersection of tech, product, and distribution in insurance: building agencies, working inside carriers and insurtechs, and sitting on the venture and innovation team at State Farm.
On its face, insurance is a strange guest for a show about big ideas. It runs on mainframes coded in COBOL, 46,000-plus independent agencies, and a century of regulation. But as Clint points out, insurance was born in coffee shops: the first policies were underwritten at Lloyd's of London. So the real question is the one every founder in a hard industry faces: how do you build something new inside a world built to resist it?
Clint's answer flips the usual startup instinct. The winning move isn't a sharper vision or a shinier platform. It's learning to move inside the industry's existing circles: the agencies who own distribution, the carriers who carry the risk, and the legacy tech that connects them. Miss any one of them and the best product in the world goes nowhere.
From there it gets sharper. James and Clint get into why trying to replace the incumbents is a losing bet, how the same pitch has to be reframed for a carrier versus an agent, and why, as James puts it, if you want to be a rule breaker you first have to know the rules. It's a lesson that runs straight through the work Moxie does in the restaurant space too, where every product has to win for the operator and the guest at the same time.
We won't give away the whole playbook here. That's what the episode is for.
